Gov Aliyu Did Not Accompany Otti to Visit Nnamdi Kanu — Sokoto Government Denies Reports
Sokoto State authorities have rejected claims that Governor Ahmed Aliyu joined Abia State Governor Alex Otti on a visit to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.
A statement released on Friday by Aliyu’s spokesman, Abubakar Bawa, said the report was false, explaining that the governor was in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj as of November 30, 2025, when Otti made a private trip to the state.
According to the statement, Otti was received on arrival at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport by selected commissioners and Special Advisers, who later accompanied him to the Government House for the usual courtesies extended to visiting state leaders.
The government stressed that Sokoto is known for its hospitality and respect for all visitors, regardless of background. It added that Aliyu remains dedicated to national unity and continues to uphold the rule of law.
The clarification comes after Otti’s prison visit to Kanu drew significant public attention and was described by IPOB as both historic and unexpected. Otti was accompanied by Emmanuel Kanu, Abia State Attorney General Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), and his media adviser, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court on November 20, 2025, after being found guilty of terrorism and related charges.
