Gov Alia Signs Landmark Legislation Ending Life Pensions for Benue Ex-Governors, Deputies

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has officially signed into law a series of ten bills recently passed by the state House of Assembly. Among these is the highly anticipated bill that terminates the provision of life pensions for former governors and their deputies.

During the signing ceremony held at Government House in Makurdi on Tuesday night, Governor Alia emphasized that the new laws are designed to safeguard the rights and safety of Benue residents. He stated that these legislative actions reflect a commitment to the welfare of the people over the interests of a select few.

The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, presented the bills to the governor, highlighting the 10th Assembly’s dedication to enacting laws that positively impact the state’s populace.

The bill abolishing life pensions for former governors and deputies marks a notable shift in Benue State’s legislative landscape. Initially repealed by the state House of Assembly on May 27, the previous law granted lifelong stipends to former governors and deputies, equivalent to the current salaries of the sitting governor, funded from the state’s consolidated revenue. Additionally, it provided substantial maintenance allowances of N25 million for former governors and N15 million for former deputy governors every four years.

Lawmakers deemed the previous law as “anti-people,” with unanimous support for its repeal following extensive debates within the House.

Governor Alia urged citizens to set aside political affiliations when it comes to matters of law and governance, asserting that the new legislation transcends party lines, including APC, PDP, APGA, and LP.
