Ghana Drunkards Association Threatens Nationwide Protest Over High Alcohol Prices

The Ghana Drunkards Association has issued a three-week ultimatum to the government, demanding a reduction in alcohol prices following the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies. In a video circulating widely on social media, the association criticized the continued rise in the cost of alcoholic beverages despite the strengthening of the local currency.

Moses Drybones, president of the association, expressed concern over a reported 15 percent price hike, which he said is negatively impacting operators of drinking joints across the country. He stated that while government interventions have led to reduced prices for transport and food items, no similar relief has been provided for alcoholic drinks.

The association is calling on President John Mahama and the Minister of Trade to engage in dialogue within the given timeframe to address the issue. Drybones warned that failure to act would trigger a nationwide demonstration involving what he claims to be approximately 16.6 million members.

“We’ve heard that the Ghana cedi has appreciated against the dollar, forcing the president to reduce the price of goods in the market,” Drybones said in the video. “He has reduced the price of transport and food items, but we have heard nothing about alcohol.”

The group insists that the government must take immediate steps to make alcoholic beverages more affordable or face a mass protest after the deadline.
