German Airport Closed as Armed Man Holds 4-Year-Old Daughter Hostage
In a harrowing incident that unfolded at Hamburg Airport, a 35-year-old man forcibly breached security, resulting in a tense standoff as he held his 4-year-old daughter hostage in his car on the airport’s tarmac. The situation led to the cancellation of all flights on Saturday night, affecting approximately 3,200 passengers.
The disturbing incident began around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday when the armed individual rammed through a gate at Hamburg Airport. Eyewitnesses reported that the man fired several shots into the air with his weapon before hurling Molotov cocktails from his vehicle. Shockingly, he parked his car next to a Turkish Airlines commercial plane while passengers were on board.
Federal police swiftly responded to the situation and initiated negotiations with the man, who is believed to be of Turkish origin from Lower Saxony. His actions were allegedly driven by a custody battle, as he had forcibly taken his 4-year-old daughter from her mother, as confirmed by the police.
Prior to the incident, the man’s wife had contacted the authorities to report a possible child abduction. Police have since sent a psychologist to the scene to engage with the man, who remains inside the vehicle with the child.
Despite the alarming circumstances, all passengers on the Turkish Airlines plane were safely evacuated, and there is no immediate threat to others on the airport premises. Both state and federal police forces have deployed a significant number of officers to handle the situation.
Authorities remain cautiously optimistic, stating, “He wants to talk to us, and we initially rate that as very positive,” as negotiations continue.
Hamburg Airport officials worked diligently to accommodate the affected passengers, although all flights remained canceled throughout the evening, awaiting a resolution to this heart-wrenching situation.
