Ganduje Advocates Constitutional Roles for Deputy Governors
In a recent address at the annual conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria (FFDGN), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), called for the establishment of specific constitutional roles for deputy governors in Nigeria. Ganduje’s proposal aims to keep deputy governors actively engaged in governance and prevent unnecessary clashes with their respective state governors.
The conference, held under the theme “Partnering in the shared vision for good governance and sustainable development” in Abuja, was attended by prominent figures in Nigerian politics. Dr. Ganduje, represented by Mr. Emma Eneukwu, the APC Deputy National Chairman, South, expressed his support for this cause.
“I am happy that you, the deputy governors, have decided to come together and form yourselves into a forum and embark on this advocacy. As you create awareness, as you meet people and talk to leaders of our country, there is a need to constitutionally give roles to the deputy governors,” Dr. Ganduje emphasized.
He stressed the importance of acknowledging the existing Nigerian Constitution and the need for it to be respected and enforced by all. Chief Kanu Agabi, former Attorney General of the Federation, echoed this sentiment during his speech, emphasizing the importance of good people to enforce the constitution.
While addressing the gathering, Sen. Gorge Akume, representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), urged governors to delegate key roles to their deputies, providing them with a sense of belonging. This, he argued, would help the majority of Nigerians feel the impact of governance.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, also encouraged serving and former governors and their deputies to work together for the betterment of the nation. He recognized the valuable institutional knowledge and experience they bring to the table.
The Chairman of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors, Mr. Chris Akomas, pledged the forum’s commitment to nation-building and improving Nigeria’s democratic process. He also announced plans to compile a book based on the experiences of deputy governors in office, providing insights and suggestions for addressing the challenges they face.
This call for constitutional roles for deputy governors aims to enhance their participation in governance, reduce conflicts, and contribute to the overall development of Nigeria. It represents a significant step towards strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.
