Fuel Tanker Explodes, Claiming Over 30 Lives, Incinerating Dozens of Vehicles in Delta

In a horrifying incident that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, October 1, over 30 lives are feared lost, and more than twenty vehicles were reduced to charred wreckage as a fuel-laden tanker erupted into a towering inferno. This devastating event occurred on the stretch of road between Ologbo in Edo State and Koko-Ugbenu in Delta State, sending shockwaves through the region.

The catastrophe struck at approximately 1 am, with eyewitnesses recounting a nightmarish scene of destruction. The inferno, fueled by an estimated thirty thousand liters of highly flammable cargo, raged uncontrollably, consuming everything in its path.

As chaos reigned, a trailer carrying rams and goats became entangled in the catastrophe. In a desperate bid for survival, the animals escaped into the nearby bushes. Resourceful youths from adjacent communities managed to capture some of the fleeing livestock, seizing the opportunity amid the tragedy for an unexpected Independence Day celebration.

Details regarding the cause of the incident remain elusive, shrouding the disaster in uncertainty. Accounts from the scene suggest that after the tanker overturned, people rushed to collect fuel spewing from the ruptured tanker, unaware of the imminent catastrophe that would follow.

Contrary to earlier reports circulating on various media platforms, Pastor Glory Michael Asiughwure, who was caught in the traffic jam resulting from the incident, disclosed that the casualty count exceeded twenty, and more than twenty vehicles fell victim to the raging blaze.

The incident sent shockwaves through the state, with passengers and drivers scrambling to escape the perilous situation. It wasn’t until 9 am on Sunday morning that the Nigerian Army, Police, and Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene to maintain order and provide assistance.

As the authorities begin their investigation into this devastating tragedy, there are lingering questions regarding safety protocols and emergency response. The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, remained cautious in his response, stating, “Not confirmed yet.”

As of the time of filing this report, the fire continues to rage at the scene, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak in its wake. The community now faces the difficult task of recovering from this calamity and mourning the lives lost in this tragic incident.
