From Mali to Nigeria: French Coach Éric Chelle Eyes Super Eagles Top Job
French-born coach Éric Chelle, currently at the helm of the Malian national team, has expressed his desire to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria. In a recent interview, Chelle revealed his aspiration to take on the role, highlighting it as an honor and a proud moment for his career.
Chelle, who led Mali to the quarter-finals of the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and recently achieved a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in a friendly match, believes he could contribute significantly to the Super Eagles’ success. The former Lens captain praised the rich history and immense talent of Nigerian football, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the team to new heights.
The Nigerian football scene has been turbulent recently. After parting ways with Coach José Peseiro following the AFCON, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) appointed Finidi George, who was dismissed after just two games. This instability has left the Super Eagles in a precarious position, with their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hanging in the balance.
Under Chelle’s guidance, the Malian team has shown remarkable performance, with 14 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses in 22 matches between 2022 and 2024.
