Former UK Prison Officer Jailed After Viral Video Shows Sexual Activity with Inmate
A former UK prison officer has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after being filmed engaging in sexual activity with an inmate, a video of which quickly went viral online. Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, was identified by senior staff members after the footage surfaced, leading to her arrest at Heathrow Airport while attempting to board a flight to Madrid with her father. Abreu had previously pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.
Andrew Davy, governor of Wandsworth Prison, expressed the far-reaching impact of Abreu’s actions, which he stated had undone the years of trust and respect female staff had worked hard to establish in the all-male facility. He also noted that female staff members had reported increased unwanted attention from inmates, with many now feeling “considered fair game.”
The viral video, which captured an incident between June 26 and 28, was followed by the discovery of additional misconduct during an investigation. Authorities found another recording on Abreu’s prison-issued body-worn camera, showing her performing a sex act on the same inmate. Abreu admitted to having sexual relations with the prisoner on another occasion as well. Judge Martin Edmunds KC described the video as part of a pattern of repeated misconduct, not an isolated incident.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that investigations into the two inmates involved in the video are ongoing. A Prison Service spokesperson commented that while most staff are hardworking and honest, the organization is working to strengthen its vetting processes and Counter Corruption Unit to root out individuals who break the rules. The Prison Officers’ Association acknowledged that incidents like Abreu’s undermine the efforts of the wider workforce but emphasized that they represent a small minority of staff.
