Former Governor Suswam Reveals Why He May Leave PDP Soon

By Arthur Maduka

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has said he may soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if the internal crisis currently rocking the party remains unresolved.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Wednesday, Suswam expressed frustration with the party’s prolonged instability. When asked if he was considering leaving the PDP, where he served as a two-term governor and senator, he responded, “There’s a possibility that I will.”

His remarks come amid renewed tensions within the PDP following the controversial reinstatement of Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s national publicity secretary. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has opposed the move and criticised Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum for allegedly undermining the party’s constitutionally recognised structures.

The latest dispute has deepened the PDP’s internal crisis, further dividing party leaders and fuelling speculation about high-profile defections.

Suswam noted that he is open to joining any viable alternative, naming the Labour Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and even the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as possible options. “There are so many alternatives,” he said. “There is Labour Party, there’s Alliance for Democracy, there’s NNPP by Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso is a colleague and a friend. APC can be an alternative.”

Suswam’s comments reflect growing discontent among senior PDP figures as the party continues to grapple with internal divisions and leadership disputes.
