Former First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. Speaking at the university’s 43rd post-graduate convocation ceremony, she emphasized that it is never too late to pursue academic goals, encouraging both women and youths to remain committed to education regardless of age.
Wearing her academic gown, Patience Jonathan addressed the audience with gratitude and optimism. “No age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old. If I can do it, you can also do it,” she said. She highlighted the importance of education in improving society, noting that even in retirement, individuals can return to school to refresh their minds and learn new skills.
The former First Lady dedicated her academic achievement to Nigerian women and pledged to continue advocating for the empowerment of vulnerable groups, especially women, children, and the youth. She said she would use this milestone as motivation to further promote dialogue and social betterment.
Reflecting on her journey through the PhD program, Jonathan expressed deep appreciation to her family for their support. She thanked her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, for his encouragement and guidance, as well as her children and friends for their understanding and motivation throughout her academic pursuit.
“I am very grateful to the Almighty God who made today a reality. I feel very happy and fulfilled,” she said
