“Foreign Sponsors Behind Planned Protests,” Says IGP Egbetokun
Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has accused foreign sponsors of orchestrating planned protests set to occur from August 1 to August 10, 2024. He claims these protests aim to incite violence and widespread destruction across the country.
Egbetokun made this announcement during a briefing at the Force Headquarters on Friday. He emphasized that leaders of groups intending to protest must register with the police command in their respective states to ensure proper oversight.
While acknowledging the citizens’ right to protest, the IGP insisted that peaceful protesters must be protected. He warned that groups failing to adhere to these guidelines might have ulterior motives. Egbetokun also stressed that all protesting groups must disclose their intended venues, routes, and locations for proper coordination.
