“Focus on Strengthening Homeland Rather Than Seeking Greener Pastures Abroad,” Tinubu Urges Nigerian Graduates
In a heartfelt address at the combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo, President Bola Tinubu urged Nigerian graduates to focus on strengthening their homeland, cautioning against the growing trend of seeking opportunities abroad.
Represented by Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Tinubu encouraged the graduates to exercise patriotism by using their skills to solve pressing societal challenges. Emphasizing Nigeria’s potential, he encouraged them to believe in their ability to make local opportunities as promising as those abroad.
“As you step into the world, I urge you to be agents of change, using your knowledge and tools to uplift our society,” Tinubu remarked. “I appeal to your sense of patriotism—resist the temptation to look for greener pastures elsewhere. Together, we can cultivate our nation’s potential to be even greater.”
In his address, Tinubu highlighted his administration’s initiatives to ease the economic pressures on the public, especially the vulnerable, pointing to ongoing reforms that aim to alleviate financial hardship and create jobs. He also underscored the importance of practical, demand-driven research at universities, which he argued could be transformative for Nigeria’s development.
Prof. Zubairu Abdullah, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, thanked President Tinubu for implementing a student loan scheme and other educational reforms. He raised concerns over land encroachment issues, appealing to the President for a perimeter fence to protect university lands from nearby communities.
Also present, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, who received an honorary doctorate in Political Science, expressed gratitude, viewing the conferment as a testament to resilience and the boundless possibilities available for those who commit to progress.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo, acknowledged the challenges posed by the economic environment, which he said has tempered expectations but reaffirmed the University’s commitment to producing graduates who will drive the nation forward.
