Five Burned to Death in Bus Accident on Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway
Tragedy struck in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, early Friday morning when a passenger bus caught fire, resulting in the deaths of at least five people. The incident occurred in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway, near the G-hostel junction.
Witnesses reported that the bus was traveling into the state around 12:20 AM when it collided with road obstacles set up by a maintenance team working on the highway. Police spokesperson Joshua Ụkandu confirmed that the vehicle lost control after hitting these barriers, leading to the fire.
In addition to the fatalities, seven other passengers sustained severe burns and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
“The driver may not have been aware of the obstacles on the road,” said Ukandu, emphasizing the ongoing reconstruction of the area as a contributing factor to the accident.
