“First Lady’s Convoy Not Involved in Akure Accident” — Police
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was not involved in a road accident that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl in Akure on Thursday, April 17.
In an official statement, police spokesperson Olusola Ayanlade said the tragic incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus vehicle, not by any vehicle in the First Lady’s convoy. Senator Tinubu was in the state for an empowerment programme at the time.
“Eyewitness accounts and our preliminary investigation have established that the First Lady’s convoy was not linked to the accident,” the police said. A witness reportedly pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle after the incident occurred in the Oba Ile area of the city.
The police also noted that several people at the scene, including the parents of the deceased child, corroborated the account of the hit-and-run. Ondo State Commissioner of Police visited the bereaved family personally and assured them of a thorough investigation.
The command expressed its condolences and urged the public to assist with any useful information that could help track down the suspect. Members of the public were encouraged to report any leads to the nearest police station.
