Chinese National Seen Giving Cash to Police in Viral Video Breaks Silence
A Chinese national seen in a viral video involving Nigerian Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers in Kaduna has publicly denied any act of bribery and issued an apology for the controversy the footage has sparked.
The video, which made the rounds on social media, showed members of a Chinese delegation interacting with armed police officers, prompting speculation and public concern over the nature of the exchange. In response, Mr. Jiang, one of the individuals in the video, released an official statement on Friday, April 17, clarifying the circumstances and rejecting allegations of misconduct.
Jiang emphasized that no bribes were offered, requested, or exchanged during the encounter. He stated that the clip had been taken out of context and misinterpreted, leading to unfounded assumptions about the delegation’s intentions. According to him, the interaction was open and friendly, with no secret dealings involved.
Addressing the cultural context of the situation, Jiang explained that it is customary in Chinese tradition to show appreciation to individuals performing their duties with professionalism and respect. He stressed that the gesture captured in the video was one of goodwill, not an attempt at influence.
“We are sorry about how this played out,” Jiang said, reaffirming the group’s commitment to continuing operations in Nigeria. He also appealed for the continued presence of security personnel to ensure the safety of their team, stating that their presence provides a sense of security and belonging.
The delegation concluded the statement with a sincere apology, expressing hope that the matter would be viewed with understanding moving forward.
