Finidi George Appointed Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Finidi George as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles. The announcement came on Monday, following approval from the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee.

Finidi George, who previously served as assistant coach to José Santos Peseiro, takes over the helm after Peseiro’s departure. Peseiro stepped down following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) runner-up finish at the 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

George’s first tasks as interim head coach were in Morocco last month during two friendly matches. In the first match, the Super Eagles defeated Ghana 2-1, breaking an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, they lost the second match 0-2 against Mali.

George brings extensive experience to his new role. A member of Nigeria’s “Golden Generation,” he was part of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team in Tunisia and played in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups. He earned 62 caps for Nigeria and played for notable European clubs, including Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis.

Finidi George’s immediate focus is guiding the Super Eagles through two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. These matches are vital, with Nigeria currently in third place in Group C, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa.

With the challenge ahead, George aims to lead the Super Eagles to a successful qualification campaign and restore the team to its former glory. Fans and stakeholders are eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of Nigerian football.
