Finally, President Tinubu Returns to Nigeria 7 Days After UNGA, Ending Speculation
President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after a week of uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts following the conclusion of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. His return comes amidst questions about his itinerary, which had remained undisclosed as members of his delegation returned home.
Accompanied by key officials including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu had attended the UNGA. However, his silence on his location after departing New York on September 22 raised concerns.
Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale had refrained from providing information on Tinubu’s whereabouts during this period, further fueling speculations. Unverified reports suggested that the President may have flown to Paris from New York.
During his time in the U.S., President Tinubu addressed the UNGA, emphasizing Nigeria’s alignment with the UN’s objectives of peace, security, human rights, and development. In his role as Chairman of ECOWAS, he sought international assistance to restore democratic governance while addressing political and economic challenges, including the threat of violent extremism in the region.
President Tinubu also engaged with Nigerian diaspora communities, encouraging them to contribute to the nation’s progress and overlook past frustrations. He later met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, discussing measures to combat illicit siphoning and smuggling of Africa’s abundant mineral resources. He expressed concern that human rights concerns had been used as a shield for those engaging in such activities.
Notably, President Tinubu rang the bell at the National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotation System in New York, highlighting Nigeria’s presence on the global financial stage.
The return of President Tinubu to Nigeria brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding his post-UNGA activities, allowing for a resumption of his presidential duties in the country.
