FG Issues Warning Against Excess Salt Intake Following Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s Viral Remarks

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a warning to Nigerians about the dangers of excessive salt consumption, following a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), encouraged people to increase their salt intake. In the video, which has circulated widely on social media, Oyakhilome claimed that Africans have been discouraged from consuming salt in order to drive demand for sodium-based medications. “They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium,” he stated during a church service. “Salt is not your enemy.”

Responding to the video, the health ministry cautioned Nigerians to follow scientifically backed dietary guidance and warned against the spread of misinformation that could jeopardize public health. In a statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the ministry stressed the importance of countering claims that undermine medical advice. “While we deeply respect the important role of faith and religious leaders in our society, it is crucial to correct misinformation that poses a risk to public health,” the statement read.

The ministry explained that although sodium is a vital mineral necessary for nerve and muscle function, consuming too much salt is linked to serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease. It also cited recommendations from the World Health Organisation, which advises a maximum daily salt intake of 5 grams—or about one teaspoon—for adults.

The Federal Ministry of Health concluded by urging Nigerians to seek dietary and medical advice from certified health professionals and to remain critical of information not supported by scientific evidence.
