Female Police Inspector Killed During Routine Check, 16 Arrested
A female police inspector, Christiana Erekere, was fatally attacked during a routine checkpoint operation in Rivers State, Nigeria, leading to the arrest of 16 suspects in connection with her death.
The tragic incident occurred on April 25, 2024, in front of the Taabaa Police Station in the Khana local government area. According to Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, the police inspector was on duty at the Bori Police Division when she stopped a group of men traveling in a Lexus salon car during a routine check.
The suspects became agitated during the check, resulting in a heated argument. The individuals in the vehicle allegedly blocked the road, obstructing traffic and causing a public disturbance. Police officers on the scene attempted to deescalate the situation, but the occupants refused to comply with their orders, claiming that Inspector Erekere had recorded their disruptive behavior on her mobile phone.
In a sudden and violent turn of events, the suspects tried to forcibly take Inspector Erekere’s phone, leading to a brutal attack with stones. The severity of the assault caused Inspector Erekere to lose consciousness. She was immediately taken to Nnadum Hospital in Bori, but despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Rivers State Police Command expressed deep sadness over the loss of Inspector Erekere and extended their condolences to her family and colleagues during this difficult time. The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, with a commitment to bringing all those responsible to justice.
The 16 suspects arrested in connection with the murder are now in police custody, pending further investigation and prosecution. The Rivers State Police Command has assured the public that they will not rest until those involved in this heinous crime are held accountable for their actions.
Inspector Erekere’s body has been transported to the mortuary for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation. The Police Command emphasized its commitment to public safety and reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that justice is served for the tragic loss of a dedicated officer in the line of duty.
