Federal Lawmakers Commend Governor Fubara’s Democratic Approach in Allowing Rivers LG Chairmen to Complete Tenure
In a notable display of democratic stewardship, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has earned praise from opposition federal lawmakers for his decision to allow elected local government chairmen to complete their tenure without interruption. The chairmen, originally appointed during the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike, saw their three-year terms come to an end on Monday, June 17, 2024.
The G60 lawmakers, in a statement issued through their spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, commended Governor Fubara for his commitment to democratic principles. They highlighted that unlike many of his counterparts who swiftly replaced elected officials upon assuming office, Governor Fubara chose to respect the tenure of the local government chairmen despite challenges and disagreements.
The statement underscored Governor Fubara’s background as a career civil servant, emphasizing his adherence to legal processes and due diligence throughout the tenure of the local government chairmen. It contrasted his approach with instances in other states, such as Benue, where local councils were dissolved without cause, and caretaker committees were repeatedly appointed.
“Governor Fubara’s decision not to disrupt the tenure of the local government chairmen reflects his commitment to democratic norms,” stated the lawmakers. They acknowledged the tensions that arose due to the chairmen’s allegiance to the previous administration but lauded Governor Fubara for allowing due process to prevail.
The lawmakers recalled past legal battles and interventions that attempted to remove the chairmen prematurely, noting Governor Fubara’s steadfast adherence to judicial decisions and democratic principles. They concluded by expressing optimism that this democratic continuity would contribute to stability and progress in Rivers State.
As the state moves forward from this milestone, Governor Fubara’s handling of the local government transition sets a precedent for democratic governance in Nigeria’s political landscape. His decision to uphold the tenure of the local government chairmen despite political differences has earned him commendation from various quarters, signifying a step towards fostering unity and institutional integrity within the state.
