Federal Government Establishes Committee to Reconstitute Governing Councils of 61 Universities

In a recent development, the Federal Government has initiated steps towards reconstituting the governing councils of sixty-one federal universities across the nation. Dr. Chris Maiyaka, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), made this announcement during an interaction session with journalists held in Abuja.

Dr. Maiyaka, who also serves as a member of the committee tasked with this responsibility, urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to place trust in President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fulfilling his promises.

It can be recalled that President Tinubu’s administration took the decision to dissolve all governing councils of federal universities in June 2023.

The absence of these councils for over eleven months has raised concerns among stakeholders, including ASUU, who have been advocating for their prompt reconstitution.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Maiyaka stated, “Government is actively working to reconstitute the governing councils of 61 federal universities. We are ensuring that individuals with the highest qualifications are appointed to ensure the realization of Mr. President’s renewed hope agenda.”

Furthermore, he outlined that upon reconstitution, the newly formed councils will undergo an orientation course aimed at enhancing their performance and effectiveness in their respective roles.
