FCTA Joint Task Force Removes Illegal Structures in Katampe Extension
In a concerted effort to enhance city sanitation, the Joint Task Force on City Sanitation, led by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has successfully dislodged artisans and traders operating illegally beneath high-tension wires in Katampe Extension, Abuja.
The operation, spearheaded by Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of Development Control at FCTA, aimed not only to remove unauthorized businesses but also to eradicate suspected criminal elements occupying reserved green zones, including the FCT Water Supply Facility.
Expressing his concern over the invasion of the area, Mr. Galadima emphasized the inherent danger of establishing structures or conducting business activities beneath high-tension wires. This marks the fourth attempt to clear the area, as culprits persistently return despite previous removals.
“We are working in partnership with the Residents’ Association of Katampe Extension and FCT Parks and Recreation Department to prevent illegal traders and criminals from occupying the areas,” stated Galadima, underscoring the collaborative efforts to ensure proper utilization of green spaces.
Isa Abdulmalik, Assistant Director of Maintenance at Parks and Recreation Department, disclosed plans to establish a neighborhood park for recreational activities. Similar initiatives in areas such as Kabusa, Gaduwa, Guzape, and Apo Dutse have successfully transformed recovered spaces into parks, curbing illegal activities and occupation by hoodlums.
Peter Olumuji, Secretary of FCTA Command and Control Centre, justified the operation, citing residents’ complaints about criminal activities in the area. “The clearance operation is to sanitize the area and ensure the security and safety of residents,” remarked Olumuji.
The FCTA remains committed to sustaining these efforts until the complete eradication of illegal activities under high-tension cables and the revitalization of green spaces for the benefit of the community.
