FCTA Crushes 601 Impounded Motorcycles in Abuja Crackdown
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has crushed 601 motorcycles impounded for operating in restricted areas within Abuja, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing transportation regulations across the city. The exercise, carried out by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), took place under the supervision of the Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Elechi Chinedum.
Chinedum stated that the operation was grounded in existing laws, particularly the FCT transportation regulations signed into law on January 1, 2023, under the former FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello. He emphasized that the enforcement goes beyond aesthetics and now addresses serious concerns about public safety and criminal activities facilitated by commercial motorcycles.
DRTS Director, Abdulateef Bello, noted that the routine crushing exercise supports a longstanding ban on commercial motorcycles in the federal capital, which dates back to 2006. He highlighted that in addition to traffic violations, the growing use of motorcycles in criminal operations has made enforcement more urgent. Bello issued a warning to individuals investing in commercial motorcycles for use within restricted areas, stating that the administration would continue to seize and crush bikes forfeited by the courts as a deterrent.
The 601 motorcycles crushed in this operation mark the first such exercise by the FCTA this year.
