FCT Minister Wike Orders Demolition of Structures in Kugbo Market
In a move to streamline development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate demolition of structures obstructing roadways at the Kugbo International Market. The directive, issued on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, follows an inspection tour of the ongoing market construction, as well as a visit to the site proposed for the new Ministry of Livestock Development in the Central Business District.
The Kugbo International Market project, a public-private partnership between the Abuja Investment Company (AICL) and Mesotho Group Limited, has been described by Wike as a significant investment that should be encouraged. However, he noted several challenges, particularly the encroachment of structures into road corridors.
“This is an investment that should be encouraged. Though there are problems like encroachment, I have directed the Department of Development Control to immediately demolish any structure causing an obstruction,” Wike stated. He emphasized the importance of maintaining clear roadways for the smooth operation of the market.
Wike also called on Mesotho Group to invest additional funds to ensure the market’s completion. According to the minister, the investor has been given until January 2025 to fully complete the project, though the first phase is already ready for use. Wike expressed plans to open the first phase soon and relocate roadside traders into the market to ease traffic congestion.
In line with the FCT’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Wike hinted at potential support for less privileged traders. He suggested that the government might subsidize shop spaces through an empowerment program, helping traders secure space in the new market.
“The Abuja Investment Company will sit down with the investor to reach an agreement. Even if it means putting in our own stake, we will ensure people get allocations here,” Wike stated, adding that the market will provide employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy.
The minister concluded by stressing that road trading would no longer be tolerated, assuring that the government would work to balance fair shop prices with the investor’s interests.
