Father, Son Killed in Yet Another Bandit Attack on Plateau Community
In another harrowing incident, assailants attacked Durbi village in the Shere district of Jos East local government area, leaving two victims dead, including a father and his son. The assault compounds the recent tragedy in the state, where over 190 lives were lost in Christmas Eve attacks on Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi local government areas.
Markus Nyam, Chairman of the Transition Implementation Committee, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers struck on Saturday night. The community’s vigilantes bravely engaged the assailants, resulting in the death of one attacker, while others fled. Responding swiftly, the Joint Security Task Force Operation Safe Haven prevented further damage.
In the aftermath of the Christmas attacks, Nigeria’s service chiefs visited the affected areas, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. The assailants not only claimed lives but also set houses ablaze, looted farm produce, and destroyed properties. The violence prompted nearly 20,000 people, predominantly women and children, to flee their homes, seeking refuge in 23 Red Cross camps.
Vice President Kashim Shettima assured the region of imminent aid during a visit, with the government pledging to prevent any hijacking of relief supplies. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered security agencies to apprehend the culprits, recognizing the urgent need to address the cycle of violence.
The northwest and central regions of Nigeria have long grappled with bandit militias, exacerbating tensions between herders and farmers over natural resources. Additionally, climate pressures and rapid population growth contribute to the complex social landscape, fostering violence.
UN rights chief Volker Turk expressed deep concern over the Christmas weekend attacks, urging the government to break the cycle of impunity and address root causes to prevent further devastation. As the nation grapples with these challenges, the call for swift and meaningful action resonates, emphasizing the need for lasting solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of affected communities.
