Family Reveals Cause of Death of Nollywood Actor Alexx Ekubo
The family of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has confirmed that he died from complications related to advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The actor’s death was widely reported on Tuesday, with conflicting claims initially linking it to either liver or kidney cancer. His family later addressed the speculation in a statement shared on his Instagram page.
According to the statement, the 40-year-old died at Evercare Hospital after what the family described as a “brief but courageous battle” with stage 4 kidney cancer.
“After a brief but courageous battle, Alexx passed away at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer,” the statement read.
The family said the actor kept his illness private while remaining hopeful about recovery.
“Throughout this difficult journey, he bore his pain with remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and enduring hope, believing that one day his testimony would be shared with the world,” the statement added.
Metastatic kidney cancer, also known as stage 4 kidney cancer, occurs when cancer spreads from the kidney to other parts of the body, including the lungs, liver, bones or brain.
The family also revealed that Ekubo was married before his death, describing him as a “beloved husband, son, brother and friend”.
They appealed for privacy and prayers as they mourn his passing.
“During this deeply painful time, we humbly ask for privacy and prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul, and for all who mourn this immense loss,” the family said.
They added that funeral arrangements would be announced later and thanked supporters for their prayers and messages.
Ekubo gained popularity through his roles in Nollywood films and television productions. He was also known for his former relationship with entrepreneur Fancy Acholonu.
In 2021, Acholonu announced the end of their engagement months before their planned wedding. She later apologised publicly to the actor in 2022 and spoke about the breakup in an iterview published in 2023.
