Factional Rivers Assembly, Led by Amaewhule, Passes Bill to Return School to Government
The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule amidst factional disputes, convened on Tuesday, July 9, for its second session following a recent Court of Appeal judgment.
During this session, the Assembly passed a bill amending the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005, which mandates the return of Kalabari Girls High School in Buguma from church control to the state government.
In a statement from Amaewhule’s Special Assistant on Media, Martins Wachukwu, it was noted that lawmakers engaged in a thorough debate on the House Committee on Education’s report. The legislators expressed unanimous support for the bill, emphasizing that state management would enhance the school’s ability to meet the educational needs of girls in Asari Toru Local Government Area and beyond.
Speaker Amaewhule praised Tekenari Granville, the bill’s sponsor, for his commendable initiative. He remarked that the school had been mistakenly transferred to the church and that returning it to government oversight would ensure better management. Amaewhule highlighted that the bill’s primary aim is to empower the state government to effectively administer the school, aligning with its foundational purpose.
Following their procedural guidelines, the House transitioned into a Committee of the Whole for detailed clause-by-clause consideration of the bill before reverting to Plenary for its final passage.
