Explosion in Port Harcourt: Governor Fubara Reveals Failed Bomber’s Motive

On Tuesday, an explosion along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, resulted in one fatality. The target of the failed bombing was the prestigious Presidential Hotel, a key facility in the state, as disclosed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Governor Fubara, speaking during a visit from the Senate Committee on Privatization led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, revealed that the bomber aimed to disrupt the state by targeting a venue hosting high-profile individuals, including Senate committee members. The attack, Fubara suggested, was intended to justify calls for a state of emergency in Rivers State.

“The idea was to create chaos, prompting calls for a state of emergency by showing that such incidents occur even in the presence of distinguished senators,” Governor Fubara stated. He further attributed the prevention of more extensive damage to divine intervention.

The governor also expressed frustration over what he perceives as unequal application of the law, particularly regarding tenure elongation for former local government chairmen—a non-issue in other regions, yet a contentious point in Rivers State.

“I am not fighting anyone but defending the state against those who feel they can control others’ lives,” Fubara asserted, emphasizing his focus on good governance and democratic dividends for the people of Rivers State.

In his address, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu commended Governor Fubara for his commitment to peace and quality governance. He urged the governor to maintain this peaceful stance and prioritize the state’s interests above political conflicts.

Kalu also highlighted the committee’s intent to collaborate with the state government on privatization efforts, ensuring that Rivers State benefits from such initiatives.

SK Blog confirmed the explosion, noting that it occurred around 9 am on Tuesday, likely due to accidental detonation by the individual involved.
