Ex-NHIS Boss Prof. Usman Yusuf Arraigned for Alleged Fraud, Remanded in Kuje Prison
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, on a five-count amended charge of alleged fraud. The case was heard at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Kuje, Abuja.
Yusuf, who served as NHIS boss between 2016 and 2017, is accused of using his position to confer undue advantages on himself and awarding contracts without following due procurement processes.
During the court proceedings, Prof. Yusuf pleaded not guilty to all charges. His counsel, O.I. Habeeb, requested that he remain in EFCC custody until his bail application is heard. However, Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu ruled that once a defendant is arraigned, custody shifts from the EFCC to the correctional system. She ordered that Yusuf be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until his bail hearing.
The court has adjourned the case to February 12, 2025, for further proceedings.
