Everton Faces Relegation Battle as Premier League Imposes Record 10-Point Deduction

Everton has been dealt a severe blow as the Premier League imposes a historic 10-point deduction, the largest sporting sanction in the league’s history. The Goodison Park club now finds itself in the 19th position, with a mere four points from 12 matches.

The unprecedented penalty stems from Everton’s breach of Premier League financial rules, with the club expressing shock and disappointment at the ruling and announcing plans to appeal the decision.

The Premier League initiated the investigation in March, referring Everton to an independent commission over alleged violations of profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs). Clubs are permitted a maximum loss of £105 million ($130 million) over a three-year period to avoid sanctions. However, the commission found Everton’s breach substantial, with a calculated loss of £124.5 million for the period ending the 2021/22 season.

In response to the ruling, Everton issued a statement declaring the punishment “wholly disproportionate and unjust.” The club maintains that it has been transparent with the Premier League and questions the severity of the sanction, expressing disbelief at the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith.

The statement further emphasizes Everton’s commitment to appealing the decision and expresses interest in monitoring outcomes of similar cases involving financial rules, such as the ongoing charges against Premier League champions Manchester City.

This 10-point deduction places Everton in a precarious position, level on points with bottom club Burnley and five points adrift of safety. The club, a continuous presence in the top flight since 1954, now faces a challenging battle against relegation, adding a dramatic twist to its storied history in the Premier League.
