Ethnic Tensions Flare in Abraka After Police Kill Four Suspected Kidnappers
Violence broke out in Abraka, Delta State, on Wednesday following a deadly confrontation between security forces and suspected kidnappers that left four suspects dead. The incident, which occurred in the Makati Bichi area near the railway station, has triggered a wave of reprisals and escalating ethnic tensions in the community.
Sources in the town told SK Blog that the operation was launched in response to the growing rate of kidnappings in the area. According to one resident, a joint team of local hunters, railway station workers, and police officers encountered armed herdsmen during a rescue mission early Wednesday morning. The suspects, allegedly involved in recent abductions, opened fire, prompting a gun battle in which four of them were killed. The resident claimed some of the suspects were found with ransom money and weapons.
Later that afternoon, tensions rose further when reports emerged that some northern youths retaliated by attacking local farmers, resulting in the deaths of two men. “The bodies were taken to the police station,” the resident added.
Another source confirmed that the deceased suspects were identified as Hausa. According to this source, two police officers were also reportedly killed during the confrontation. In response, angry youths in Abraka began targeting Hausa residents, with threats to set fire to Hausa-dominated areas.
The violence follows a recent protest by students in the town over the increasing number of abductions. A student told SK Blog that the protest was sparked by fears for safety and culminated in Wednesday’s clash. “Now the Hausas here are saying the people killed were innocent and are marching into the streets with knives and cutlasses,” the student said, urging anyone in Abraka or with relatives there to remain vigilant.
Videos and images circulating on social media show disturbing scenes of unrest, including armed mobs on the streets, bodies in pools of blood, and panic in areas predominantly inhabited by Hausa residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Delta State Police Command confirmed the joint operation that led to the deaths of the suspected kidnappers. Police spokesperson SP Edafe Bright said the raid was based on “credible intelligence” and involved police, local hunters, vigilantes, and anti-cult volunteers. The operation reportedly resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and 13 rounds of live ammunition. Four suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange and later died from their injuries.
The police also confirmed that one of the deceased was identified by a previously rescued victim as the leader of the kidnapping gang responsible for his abduction.
As of Wednesday night, fears of a wider ethnic conflict persist, with calls for calm circulating amid a heavy security presence in Abraka.
