ESUT Suspends Four Lecturers, Class Representative Over Money-for-Grades Allegations
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has suspended four lecturers and a class representative indefinitely over allegations of engaging in a money-for-grades scheme. The university’s Registrar, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu, confirmed the suspensions, stating that they were imposed pending further investigation.
The affected individuals are affiliated with the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM). According to Ugwu, the suspended lecturers allegedly collaborated with class representatives who acted as intermediaries, collecting money from students in exchange for grade upgrades.
“In the College of Medicine, we have suspended four lecturers for soliciting payments from students to improve their results. Some class reps have been known to go around, after marking exams, collecting small amounts from students in exchange for ensuring that the lecturers upgrade their marks,” Ugwu said in an interview over the weekend. While he did not disclose the names of those suspended, he indicated that more details might be released in the future.
This action follows ESUT’s recent efforts to uphold academic integrity. In August 2024, the university dismissed six lecturers over allegations of certificate forgery, sexual harassment, and grade manipulation.
