Enugwu-Ukwu in Shock: Deadly Ambush Leaves Multiple Dead, Survivors in Fear

The community of Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra State’s Njikoka Local Government Area has been plunged into mourning following a violent attack on Monday, September 9th, 2024. The tragic incident occurred when a group of local youths was ambushed by gunmen in the Agu Isioye area, leading to multiple deaths and several injuries.

According to local sources, the victims were reportedly lured to the scene under the guise of a meeting but were met with a barrage of gunfire from armed attackers concealed in the nearby bush. Eyewitness footage and images shared on social media show the grim aftermath of the assault, including several lifeless bodies and survivors struggling with serious injuries.

While rumors circulate suggesting involvement from individuals linked to Nawfia, a neighboring town that shares a boundary with Enugwu-Ukwu, the identities of the perpetrators remain unconfirmed. The motives behind the attack are still unclear, but the shocking violence has sparked widespread outrage and fear within the community.

One survivor, who managed to escape with gunshot wounds, shared his harrowing experience. “We were told to come and check something at Agu Isioye,” he said. “Suddenly, we were ordered to lie down, and then gunshots rang out. I was hit, but I somehow managed to escape.” The survivor also warned others to avoid the Agu Isioye area, describing it as highly dangerous, with armed men still in the vicinity.

In response to the incident, prominent figures in Enugwu-Ukwu have called on the state government to intervene and prevent further violence. Ambassador Elijah Onyeagba, a respected leader in the town, expressed shock at the incident, stating, “Our town is mourning the senseless killing of our brothers. This situation requires urgent attention to prevent an escalation of tensions between Enugwu-Ukwu and Nawfia.”

Local youth leader Emeka Okonkwo also condemned the violence, accusing those responsible of destroying the historical bonds between the two communities. “This is an unspeakable act,” he said. “We expect the government and police to take swift action, as we cannot let this incident be forgotten.”

The Anambra State Police Command has since launched an investigation into the attack. State Police spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed that three people were killed in the ambush, while five others sustained serious injuries. He added that a vehicle believed to have been used by the attackers was recovered at the scene and that testimonies from survivors are aiding the investigation. The bodies of the victims have been transported to a local morgue.

Police Commissioner CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has urged residents to remain calm, assuring the public that law enforcement is working diligently to uncover those behind the attack and bring them to justice.

This act is DESPICABLE. Enugwu Ukwu and Nawfia are Umunri, descendants of one man,Nri. It is therefore shocking that people from one progenitor will plan and murder their own brothers. Years back, the usual fear about Nawfia people was that of being poisoned. In the 1990s and before, Nawfia indigenes used to caution their visitors not to eat in any other compound to avoid being poisoned as such could be referred to the visited Nawfia indigenes. Nawfia hasn’t been known for VIOLENT KILLINGS. TOO BAD FOR NAWFIA PEOPLE TO PLAN AND KILL THEIR ENUGWU UKWU BROTHERS. Government should step in and… Read more »
