Enugu Teen Arrested for Killing Five-Year-Old Cousin After Failed Kidnap-for-Ritual Plot

Tragedy has struck the Ngwo community in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State after a 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering his five-year-old cousin following a failed plot to sell him for ritual purposes.

The suspect, identified as Ikedi Obodo Agu, reportedly lured the victim, Wisdom, away from his family home while the child was playing hide-and-seek with other children. Investigations revealed that Ikedi handed the boy over to a private security guard, with claims that they were seeking a buyer for ritual-related purposes.

When the alleged buyer failed to appear, Ikedi allegedly turned the abduction into a ransom scheme. He initially demanded **₦15 million** from the child’s family before reducing the sum to **₦200,000** and later to **₦40,000**. However, the family insisted on hearing their son’s voice before releasing any money.

Fearing exposure, Ikedi reportedly killed Wisdom by brutally clubbing him, before burying the child’s body in the bush close to his father’s house. Reports indicate the boy had been tied and blindfolded in captivity before his death.

The case came to light after community member Emmanuel Chinedu Ozoagu shared details on Facebook, along with photos of the suspect, the victim, and a video of the exhumation of the child’s remains. Ozoagu wrote that police, using tracking technology, traced the ransom calls to the Hausa security guard working along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway. Both Ikedi and the accomplice were later arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

During interrogation, Ikedi led officers to the gravesite where Wisdom’s remains were buried. Witnesses reported that he narrowly escaped mob justice from enraged youths of the community before police whisked him away.

Wisdom’s body was later exhumed and reburied in what community members described as a “respectful and befitting burial.”

In an emotional post, Ozoagu offered condolences to the grieving families, urging them to find strength despite the tragedy. He also prayed that such an incident would never be repeated in Ngwo or anywhere else.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as calls to his mobile line went unanswered at the time of filing this report.

The shocking case has left the Ngwo community in deep mourning, sparking fresh conversations on youth crime, ritual-related violence, and community safety across Enugu State.
