Enugu State Begins Registration of Unemployed Youths

In a bid to address unemployment challenges and harness the potential of its citizens, the Enugu State government has initiated a comprehensive registration program across its 17 local government areas. The aim is to identify and potentially recruit unemployed individuals into various sectors.

Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Chika Ugwuoke, announced this development during a press briefing in Enugu. According to Mr Ugwuoke, the registration drive has already amassed data on approximately 33,000 unemployed individuals, encompassing graduates, men, women, and school leavers.

The government plans to further amplify its outreach efforts through a sensitization campaign to encourage more citizens to enroll in the program.

Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is prioritizing youth empowerment, women’s inclusion, and civil service enhancement. To facilitate this, a labor market information management database has been established, serving as a repository of employment-related data from across the state.

Additionally, the government has undertaken significant strides in pension reforms, addressing arrears owed to pensioners following recommendations from a dedicated committee. Verification processes are ongoing to ensure transparency and accuracy in pension disbursements.

Awaiting the report of a committee tasked with investigating the new minimum wage, the government remains committed to fair labor practices and worker welfare.

In tandem with these efforts, the administration has inaugurated skill acquisition centers, including a specialized fashion institute, aimed at building human capital and stimulating economic growth.

Furthermore, a partnership with the Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO) is in the pipeline to establish a skill development center, offering training in both technical and vocational skills. The memorandum of understanding is awaiting final approval, signaling promising opportunities for youth development in the state.
