Enugu Set to Launch Airline, CNG Buses, and Major Infrastructure Projects Before May 29

Enugu State is poised to roll out a series of transformative transport and tourism initiatives before May 29, marking the second anniversary of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, announced the impending launch of “Enugu Air” with three aircraft—two already on ground and the third expected by month-end. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin before the anniversary. In addition, 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses will enter service across the state, with 50 already stationed at Okpara Square and another 50 set to join shortly. Newly constructed transport terminals at Holy Ghost, Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka will also commence operations within the same timeframe.

Dr. Ozor also revealed plans to establish an electric and CNG vehicle manufacturing plant in the state and roll out over 2,000 electric vehicles under the Enugu Smart Transport Programme before the end of the year.

In the tourism sector, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, detailed the first phase of an ambitious tourism upgrade. Key attractions include Awhum Waterfall, Nsude Pyramid—which will feature the South East’s first and Nigeria’s longest 600-metre canopy walkway—and the Ngwo Pine Forest, set to host the country’s first zipline. A monumental “Cross of Hope,” measuring about 50 metres and located 580 metres above sea level at Okpatu, will be a signature landmark with 15 floors and a lift.

Additional tourism developments include the Akwuke/Atakkwu Waterpark and the Ovu Lake Golf and Resort in Akpawfu. These sites will incorporate renewable energy, food courts, and experience centres, with tour buses soon arriving to ease tourist mobility.

Youth and Sports Development Commissioner, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, disclosed that the State Executive Council has approved the commencement of upgrades to Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Games Village by June, in preparation for the 23rd National Sports Festival, which Enugu will host in 2026. He also reported progress on an Animation Lab for young creatives, soon to be inaugurated by Governor Mbah, and an upcoming empowerment programme for over 2,100 youths on August 12, International Youth Day.
