Enugu Police Arrest Suspected ESN Member Over Attacks on Patrol Teams
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), linked to violent attacks on police patrols across the state.
Police sources say operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit apprehended the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Chukwujekwu Ugwu, also known as “Jekwu,” in the early hours of February 3, 2026. Ugwu was reportedly hiding in a beer parlour in Akwuke community, Awkunanaw area of Enugu, when officers moved in.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, citing police reports, stated that Ugwu tried to flee upon seeing the officers but was quickly intercepted. According to Makama, Ugwu is a prominent figure in IPOB/ESN operations within Enugu metropolis and surrounding areas.
Investigations indicate Ugwu was involved in coordinated attacks on police patrol teams, including the Distress Response Squad (DRS). He and his associates are reportedly linked to assaults on a DRS patrol along Ziks Avenue, Uwani, on December 27, 2025, and another attack along Agbani Road on January 15, 2026.
Authorities continue efforts to locate remaining suspects and recover weapons reportedly stolen during previous attacks.
