Enugu Govt Recovers 10 AK-74 Rifles, 7 Pump Action, Others from Kidnappers’ Den

The Enugu State government has successfully dismantled two major kidnappers’ hideouts, recovering an extensive arsenal including 10 AK-47 rifles, seven pump-action rifles, and two shotguns. The operation also led to the destruction of illicit Indian hemp farms and other criminal facilities.

Mr. Uche Anya, Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), disclosed these details to the press on Wednesday. The hideouts, located in East Local Government, included an uncompleted storey building with an underground tunnel in Nkwubor Layout, Emene Nike, and a large farm at Ogbeke Nike, used to house kidnapped victims.

Anya emphasized that the demolitions align with the state’s Criminal Code Law, underscoring the government’s commitment to eradicating crime. The operation followed months of undercover investigations and resulted in the rescue of several victims, including one woman abducted near the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

“The state government is resolute in its fight against criminal activities,” Anya stated. “Our goal is to ensure there are no safe havens for criminals. Properties used for such nefarious activities will be seized and repurposed.”

The ECTDA Chairman also warned property owners, stating that any involvement in criminal activities or allowing their premises to be used for such purposes will result in severe consequences. He revealed that the hideouts contained disturbing features, including underground cells camouflaged by manholes.

Moving forward, the government plans to repurpose the demolished sites for community use, such as playgrounds, gardens, or health centers. “These places will be transformed for the benefit of the community,” Anya added.

Enugu State’s proactive measures reflect its stringent anti-kidnapping laws and dedication to public safety.
