#EndBadGovernance Protesters Defy Appeals, Continue Demonstrations in Lagos, Port Harcourt
Despite appeals from authorities and religious leaders, #EndBadGovernance protesters have persisted with demonstrations in Lagos and Port Harcourt. As early as 8:00 am (WAT), youths armed with placards resumed their protests, demanding attention to pressing issues.
The protests, which began on August 1 across multiple Nigerian cities, aim to highlight the economic struggles faced by many Nigerians. With inflation soaring to 34 percent, basic necessities have become unaffordable for millions.
Authorities had urged the protesters to halt their actions after two days, but demonstrators in Lagos and Port Harcourt have refused to back down. In Lagos, the protesters assembled at the Ojota area. Initially sparse, their numbers grew steadily throughout the morning. Their placards called for the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal and criticized the government’s insensitivity, especially in light of the naira’s sharp devaluation.
Police were present to maintain order, ensuring the protests remained peaceful. Meanwhile, economic activities in the area continued uninterrupted.
Port Harcourt saw similar scenes, with protesters gathering at Pleasure Park. Although other parts of the city remained calm, the protest site became increasingly active. Protesters, some waving Nigerian flags, showed no signs of relenting, despite calls to disperse. Officers from the Rivers State Police Command’s Counter Terrorism Unit, dressed in red headgear, were on site in a display of force.
