Emmanuel Macron Appoints 34-Year-Old Gabriel Attal as France’s Youngest and First Openly Gay Prime Minister
In a move aimed at injecting fresh energy into his administration, French President Emmanuel Macron has selected Gabriel Attal, aged 34, as the new Prime Minister. Attal’s appointment makes him not only the youngest individual to hold the position but also marks a historic moment as the first openly gay head of government in France.
The decision to reshuffle the government came after days of speculation, culminating in the resignation of Elisabeth Borne, 62, who stepped down along with the rest of the government after serving less than two years in office. President Macron, acknowledging the need for a shift, accepted Borne’s resignation on Tuesday.
With the impending Olympic Games in Paris and European Parliament elections this summer, Macron’s centrist forces face the looming threat of defeat from the far-right led by Marine Le Pen. In response to this political challenge, Macron stated, “The President of the republic appointed Mr Gabriel Attal Prime Minister, and tasked him with forming a government,” as outlined in a presidential statement.
Gabriel Attal, known for his dynamic approach, is anticipated to bring a significant change of style to the prime minister’s office. This follows Borne, who was only the second woman to lead the French government. Despite expectations for Attal’s appointment after Borne’s resignation, the delay in the announcement fueled speculations about potential discontent among heavyweight government figures over Attal’s rapid rise.
Sources close to individuals rumored to be behind the tensions, including Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, have vehemently denied any dissatisfaction with Attal’s meteoric promotion. The stage is now set for Gabriel Attal to navigate the complexities of French politics and governance as he assumes the role of Prime Minister in this crucial period for the nation.
