Emir Sanusi Presides Over Maiden Palace Court as 40 Council Members Pledge Allegiance
In a significant display of unity and tradition, the 16th Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, held his first emirate council meeting on Sunday at the historic Gidan Rumfa palace. This marked his official return to power after being reinstated by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
During the meeting, over 40 district heads and senior traditional council members renewed their allegiance to Emir Sanusi, effectively quelling the tensions that had surrounded the emirship in Kano State. Among those paying homage were the five kingmakers—Madaki, Wali, Makama, Sarkin Bai, and Sarkin Dawaki Mai tuta—along with other high-ranking officials such as Waziri, Turaki, and Magajin Malam.
Emir Sanusi made a grand entrance, riding a white royal horse from the inner palace, greeted by jubilant subjects. Following the council meeting, he engaged with various interest groups, including vigilante members, women’s organizations, and other well-wishers who gathered to show their respect and loyalty.
This council meeting follows Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement, which came after Governor Yusuf assented to a new law that overturned the 2019 legislation dividing the Kano emirate into five regions—a move that had led to Sanusi’s earlier removal.
