“Eliminate Them; They Are Not Supposed to Be Remanded and Fed With Taxpayers’ Money” — Father of Suspect Who Killed His Aunt and Six Children
The father of Umar, the prime suspect in the gruesome killings of his aunt and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi, has urged authorities to execute his son instead of keeping him in custody.
Malam Awal spoke on a local radio station, distancing himself from his son and describing him as “useless to society.” He condemned the killings, which claimed the lives of his wife’s younger sister, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children, saying:
“What he committed against my younger sister and her six children is condemnable. I distance myself from him. I don’t even want them to waste time on prosecution. Umar and his likes are supposed to be eliminated. They are not supposed to be remanded and fed with taxpayers’ money.”
The attack occurred on Saturday, January 17, when Umar allegedly broke into the home of Fatima Abubakar in Dorayi Gidan Kwari. The victims included Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7), and Abdussalam (one-and-a-half years old). Police confirmed that Umar confessed to the killings, as well as to a recent attack in Tudun Yola, where two women were murdered and their home set on fire.
The killings have sparked outrage across Kano, with many calling for swift justice for the victims. President Bola Tinubu condemned the murders over the weekend and directed a thorough investigation into the incidents.
Malam Awal also praised the police for their handling of the case, stating that he had “sacrificed” his son and would not attend any court proceedings:
“Neither I nor his mother will be present in court. This is a matter of law and justice, but I have already let go of him. He has brought shame and grief to our family.”
Authorities continue to investigate the case, and Umar remains in police custody as the investigation proceeds.
