Electricity Blackout Hits Parts of Nigeria, TCN Gives Reasons
Certain States of Nigeria are experiencing electricity blackouts due to the temporary closure of the Egbin Power Station by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The shutdown, as announced through an official statement on the TCN’s handle, is a proactive measure aimed at addressing a gas pipeline leakage.
As per the statement released on Monday, the shutdown commenced at 11:13 hours on December 18, 2023, and is anticipated to last for 72 hours. The primary reason behind this action is to facilitate maintenance work on a gas pipeline supplied by the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) that connects to the Egbin Power generating station.
The temporary closure of the Egbin Power Station will result in a significant reduction of 676MW of bulk power being fed into the national grid for the duration of the three-day maintenance period. Consequently, there will be a noticeable decrease in the available bulk power intended for distribution to the load centers of various distribution companies.
Egbin Power Plant, situated in Lagos, stands as Nigeria’s largest thermal generating station, boasting an installed capacity of 1,320 MW. The ongoing maintenance work underscores the commitment to ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the nation’s power infrastructure. The affected regions are urged to bear with the temporary inconvenience as efforts are underway to swiftly address the gas pipeline issue and restore normal power supply.
