Rivers: Tinubu’s Peace Accord Moved Knife from Fubara’s Neck to His Back – Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, expressed concerns on Tuesday, asserting that President Bola Tinubu’s recent peace resolutions may have adverse effects on Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State.

The peace accord, brokered by Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, aimed to quell the longstanding political feud between Fubara and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who have been embroiled in disputes over control of the state’s political structure and finances.

Sani believes that the accord, while seemingly easing tensions, is a deceptive move that merely relocates the threat from Fubara’s neck to his back. The ongoing rift has already resulted in lawmakers defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some Commissioners resigning from Fubara’s executive council.

Tinubu’s eight-point resolution, presented during the peace deal, outlines a framework for reconciliation. However, according to Sani, this agreement serves as a temporary ceasefire, buying time for an inevitable resurgence of hostilities.

In a post on X, Sani commented, “I have now read the Rivers agreement. The accord will remove the knife from the neck of Sim and set it behind his back. The accord will bury the hatchets with leaves. The accord outwardly sells peace, but internally buys time for another round of war.”

Sani suggests that periodic assessments and improvements to the dialogue process could lead to a more lasting and genuine resolution to the crisis in Rivers State.
