El-Rufai to NSA Ribadu: “Clarify Alleged Importation of Odourless Toxic Chemical by Your Office”
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has formally requested clarification from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) over the alleged procurement of a toxic chemical substance identified as thallium sulphate.
In a letter dated January 30, 2026, and acknowledged by ONSA on February 11, El-Rufai wrote to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, stating that he was acting “as a concerned citizen.” He sought details regarding what he described as the acquisition of approximately 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate, reportedly sourced from a supplier in Poland.
Thallium sulphate is widely recognised as a highly toxic compound. Scientific literature describes it as a tasteless, odourless and colourless crystalline powder historically used as a rodenticide and insecticide. Due to its toxicity — with a fatal human dose estimated at 8–12 mg per kilogram of body weight — its production and use are restricted or prohibited in many jurisdictions. The compound can interfere with potassium function in the body, leading to severe neurological damage, hair loss and, in extreme cases, death.
The letter, titled *“Request for Clarification on the Procurement of Thallium Sulphate,”* asked for specific information regarding the purpose and intended use of the substance, the identity of the supplier, the legal basis for its importation, and the quantity and concentration involved.
El-Rufai also requested details on storage and security arrangements, regulatory oversight involving relevant health and environmental authorities, and whether any public health risk assessments or mitigation plans had been conducted.
He stated that his inquiry was made in good faith and aimed at ensuring due process, safety standards and transparency. He further requested a formal response or a designated contact within the NSA’s office for continued engagement.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as well as the national chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The development follows recent tensions between El-Rufai and the NSA, including claims by the former governor that Ribadu was involved in an attempt to have him arrested — an allegation that has contributed to heightened political exchanges in recent weeks.
