EFCC Intensifies Prosecution Efforts Against Former Kogi State Governor and Aviation Minister Over Alleged Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is escalating its pursuit of high-profile cases against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, both facing serious allegations of misappropriation of public funds.

Yahaya Bello Declared Wanted for Alleged N80 Billion Fraud

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, is under intense scrutiny by the EFCC for alleged embezzlement of about N80 billion from the Kogi treasury. The EFCC intends to arraign Bello on 19 counts related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds.

The anti-corruption agency recently attempted to arrest Bello at his Abuja residence, but the operation faced resistance from Kogi’s current governor, Usman Ododo. The EFCC has accused Ododo of aiding Bello’s escape during the siege at his home. Despite an injunction from a Kogi State High Court restraining the EFCC from arresting Bello, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a warrant for his arrest, indicating the complex legal landscape surrounding the case.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede is adamant about pursuing the case against Bello, stating that he would resign if the former governor is not prosecuted. Olukoyede also disclosed that Bello allegedly transferred $720,000 from the Kogi treasury to a Bureau de Change to pay for his child’s school fees, a move that has drawn public condemnation.

Hadi Sirika Questioned Over Alleged N8 Billion Aviation Fraud

The EFCC is also investigating former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika over alleged misappropriation of N8 billion related to the Nigeria Air project. Sirika appeared at the EFCC’s Federal Capital Territory Command for questioning regarding alleged conspiracy, abuse of office, contract inflation, and criminal breach of trust.

The allegations against Sirika stem from the controversial “unveiling” of the Nigeria Air plane in May 2023, which many believe was staged with a borrowed aircraft. The EFCC alleges that Sirika awarded contracts to his younger brother, Abubakar, through Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company with which he has ties. The contracts, worth over N8 billion, are under investigation for irregularities.

Public Response and Further Revelations

The EFCC’s actions against high-profile figures have generated significant public attention, with many expressing skepticism over the agency’s commitment to prosecuting powerful individuals. The sudden vigor in pursuing these cases has been linked to public pressure following high-profile arrests and convictions.

Critics have pointed to the EFCC’s inconsistent approach to corruption cases, often targeting less influential figures while neglecting those with substantial political connections. Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, noted that the EFCC’s recent activity might be influenced by public sentiment.

In a related development, Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, claimed that legal professionals are being hired to defend the embattled former Kogi governor on national television, further complicating the public’s perception of justice.

The unfolding drama between the EFCC and its targets underscores the challenges faced by anti-corruption agencies in pursuing high-profile cases, particularly when legal and political resistance is robust.
