EFCC Cracks Down on Cybercrime at KWASU, Arresting 48 Students, 2 Residents

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) based in Ilorin have apprehended 48 students from Kwara State University (KWASU), along with two residents of the Malete area, on charges related to internet fraud.

The arrest, carried out on Wednesday, comes in response to the growing prevalence of fraudulent activities, particularly within the campus community, according to a statement released by Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for EFCC.

The anti-graft agency disclosed that the operation was fueled by “credible intelligence over the rising trend of yahoo-yahoo business in the state, especially on campuses.”

During the arrests, EFCC operatives seized a significant haul, including nine exotic cars, 24 laptops, and a variety of mobile phones from the suspects. The agency’s statement emphasized the commitment to liberate the state from corruption and the illicit activities of ‘yahoo-yahoo boys.’

The named suspects include Idris Yekini, Ayantola Segun, Adeshina Taheeb, Mustapha Alamin, and several others, totaling 48 KWASU students. Additionally, two residents of Malete, Babalola Razaq and Godwin Ouna Ejika, were also taken into custody.

EFCC affirmed that the suspects would face legal proceedings once investigations are concluded. The charges against them and the evidence collected during the operation are expected to be presented in court as part of the judicial process.
