#EdoDecides2024: ‘Shame on You’ – Davido Calls Out INEC
Popular Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has sparked online conversations following his strong criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the ongoing Edo State governorship election. The singer took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration over alleged irregularities in the voting process.
Residents of Edo State turned out in large numbers on Saturday to participate in the off-cycle gubernatorial election. However, Davido’s vocal involvement, including his public condemnation of INEC, left many questioning his interest in the state’s election, as he hails from Osun, not Edo.
Responding to these concerns, Davido clarified via his X handle that his late mother, Imade Veronica Adeleke, was originally from Edo State. Beyond his personal connection, he emphasized that every Nigerian should care about the credibility of elections across the country.
“My mom is from Edo for those wondering why I’m interested in the election … but we as Nigerians should be concerned sha,” he wrote. Davido further recalled his previous confrontations with INEC during the Osun State election, where his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, contested. He suggested that the same issues were resurfacing in Edo, saying, “Shame on you @inecnigeria… I know how many times I had to come in here and rant before they got it right in Osun! It’s really bad. God help us.”
Earlier, the “Unavailable” crooner publicly endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, for the Edo governorship via his Instagram account.
