Edo State Gives Ex-Officials 48 Hours to Return Over 200 Missing Government Vehicles

The Edo State Government has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to officials of the previous administration to return over 200 missing government vehicles. This directive was announced by Kelly Okungbowa, Chairman of the Vehicle Recovery Committee, during a press briefing in Benin City. He urged those still holding onto the vehicles to comply immediately.

Okungbowa highlighted the importance of public cooperation, revealing that early efforts have already yielded results. Within 24 hours of the committee’s inauguration, three vehicles—a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses—were recovered from a private residence. One of the buses was found loaded with palliatives, including bags of garri and rice, which were intended for distribution to Edo residents.

The committee chair praised the role of security agencies in ensuring smooth recovery operations, noting that no resistance has been encountered so far. He also assured whistleblowers of financial rewards for providing valid and actionable information to aid the recovery efforts.

“This is public property, not private property. It belongs to the citizens of Edo State, and it is unacceptable for individuals to withhold or steal government vehicles,” Okungbowa stated.

He reaffirmed the committee’s determination to fulfill its mandate, vowing to recover all missing vehicles. “We will ensure that all stolen government vehicles are accounted for and returned to the state,” he said.

The Edo State Government has called on former officials and members of the public to provide additional information, stressing that the vehicles are vital assets for the development of the state.
