ECOWAS Responds to Withdrawal of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso
In response to the recent announcement by military juntas in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso declaring their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the ECOWAS Commission clarified that it has not yet received any formal notification from the three Member States regarding their intention to exit the regional bloc.
The military juntas, united in the Alliance of Sahel States, made the decision to withdraw after the overthrow of Niger’s democratically elected government. ECOWAS, led by President Bola Tinubu, had earlier threatened military action if the Niger junta refused to transfer power.
Despite the strong stance taken by ECOWAS, the three Sahel nations maintained their sovereign decision to leave ECOWAS. However, a communique released by the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja emphasized that the organization has been actively collaborating with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to restore constitutional order.
ECOWAS stressed the continued significance of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso as essential members of the community. The Authority of Heads of State and Government remains dedicated to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse, demonstrating the regional commitment to resolving the situation peacefully.
As the situation unfolds, the ECOWAS Commission remains vigilant and has pledged to provide further updates as developments occur.
